Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY
Fall color in NY State
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Join us for an exciting day at Storm King Art Center– it’s a museum that celebrates the relationship between sculpture and nature. Five hundred acres of landscaped lawns, fields and woodlands provide the site for postwar sculptures by internationally renowned artists such as David Smith, Louise Nevelson, Richard Serra, Mark di Suvero just to mention a few. At Storm King, the exhibition space is defined by sky and land. Unencumbered by walls, the subtly created flow of space is punctuated by modern sculpture. The grounds are surrounded by the undulating profiles of the Hudson Highlands, a dramatic panorama integral to the viewing experience. This is not a garden tour, however, the landscape architect, Bill Rutherford created a naturalistic landscape garden that “Capability” Brown would have admired. In 1997, Storm King embarked on a multi-year program to reintroduce native long grasses and wild flowers into the fields. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy nature as well as art, to meander on trails and discover sculptures or to traverse the fields to walk among monumental works.
2009 Exhibition – The opening of Storm King Wavefield is accompanied by a special exhibition, Maya Lin: Bodies of Water, on view in Storm King’s museum building. The exhibition features several works that reflect the artist’s interest in water in its various states. The works include installation, sculpture, photographs, models and drawings, among them examples related to the development of Storm King Wavefield.
