Again this year, the The Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons is sponsoring scholarships for qualified students of horticulture through the Paul Karish Fund. Applications are welcomed from graduating high-school seniors and from students pursuing an undergraduate degree or other professional training in horticulture. The deadline for applications is April 16, 2012.
Paul Karish was a horticulturalist extraordinaire. After a visit to Exbury, England Paul became enraptured with rhododendrons. He and his friend Ben Tessaro bought five acres in Amagansett with an over cover of tall oaks perfect for their growth. He amassed one of the finest Rhododendron collections on the East Coast and was renowned for his expertise on the genus; a walk through his garden was an education in itself.
He was past President of the Rhododendron Society and one of the founding member of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons.
Paul died in 1991 and left a bequest to the HAH which the Board designated as an education fund in his memory. Additional contributions from members have brought this fund to the level where this scholarship can be awarded.
The focus of this endeavor is to provide scholarship funds for education to help promote awareness and excellence in the art and science of horticulture
The mission of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons (HAH) is to provide members of the organization with an extensive catalogue of ways to exchange information and knowledge about gardening on the East End, to maximize the value of time members spend gardening, and to increase the joy of gardening.
Through its program HAH fosters the art and science of horticulture, an effort intended to ensure that great traditions of gardening on the East End continue to prosper.
The Karish Scholarship reflects the mission of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons (HAH).
