Our major fund raising event of the year is coming up. The plants being offered include a wonderful selection of annual and exotic perennials to brighten your flower beds and plant containers, exciting new perennials, award winning roses and shrubs and trees selected for our growing zone. There will also be a large assortment of plants donated by members from their own gardens. There is a wonderful Preview Party Friday evening when attendees have first pick of the offerings. Members will feast on wine and appetizers and take part in the raffles for items donated by local merchants. Remember, the proceeds from this event subsidize our monthly speakers program, our library, the HAH garden and all our HAH programs. Annual & Tender Perennials We offer plants that are the flamboyant stars of summer - long blooming, bright, giving us their all! They fill the border and overflow our pots with vibrant color, exotic forms and textures. Many are visitors just here for the summer, coming in from more tropical climes. Perennials and Connoisseur's Table The selection of perennials at the Plant Fair this year will include many old favorites as well as some new varieties - interesting species native to the Northeastern U.S. and more volume of plants that the deer won't find appealing, but you will. Quite a number of our plant varieties have been awarded recognition by one plant society or another for their excellence. All our plants are purchased from the best wholesale growers on Long Island, and we personally check the quality of these plants ourselves in early May so we know exactly what we are getting - only the best! More than half of the perennials are purchased on Friday night by those eager to get the greatest choice, so do try to come to the Preview party to avoid disappointment. There will still be plenty of items to delight on Saturday though, all of first-rate quality. Roses and More Roses As in year's past, Harvey will be personally selecting the roses offered for sale. There is a whole kaleidoscope of new colors ranging from deep oranges, musty yellows, violent violet, blue/black reds, cosmetic pink, blushing whites, not to mention stripes of pink, orange and yellow on one bloom. There is something else that's new. The best selling roses for the last 5 years are shrub roses and landscape roses. Why? They are practically carefree! |
